VIDEO: Opening Doors of Opportunity

Recently debuted at our 2015 Awards Dinner & Benefit, this short video highlights three clients’ unique experiences working with Washington Access Fund. Through their participation in our low-interest loan and IDA matched savings programs, these individuals have been able to access financial empowerment training and purchase the assistive technology they need to live more active and independent lives.

2015 Washington Access Fund Awards Dinner November 12, 2015 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The 2015 Washington Access Fund’s Awards Dinner & Benefit was held November 12th at Bell Harbor Conference Center in Seattle. Thank you to the 170 guests who attended and helped us raise nearly $67,000 to support access to technology and economic opportunity for people with disabilities in Washington State. Thank you also to our generous 2015 sponsors!

We had a great evening celebrating the 2015 Award winners and enjoyed hearing from all of the evening’s presenters including Senator Cyrus Habib, Master of Ceremonies Barry Long and WAF client Jonathan Porter.

Congratulations to our 2015 award winners. The awards were given to businesses, organizations and individuals who have made noteworthy efforts to include, serve, and help people with disabilities across the state.

Awardees

Small Business Best Practices Award: Lincoln Pharmacy

Lincoln Pharmacy is recognized for their complimentary delivery of prescriptions, medical equipment, and other medical supplies to Tacoma residents including seniors and individuals with disabilities.

Large Business Best Practices Award: Microsoft’s Disability Answer Desk

Microsoft’s Disability Answer Desk provides product and accessibility support to people with disabilities. Recently they expanded their services, now offering American Sign Language (ASL) technical support for deaf customers whose preferred method of communication is ASL.

Innovation Award: Ivan Owen’’s co-creation of Low-cost 3D Printed Prosthetics

Ivan Owen, University of Washington, Bothell, is a self-proclaimed artist and designer. Ivan is being honored for his co-creation of the first low-cost 3D printed prosthetics. This very pioneering project was also made open source so the designs could have greater community impact.

Frances Pennell Economic Opportunity Award: Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc.

Kirk Adams, President and CEO at The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc., has successfully led aggressive efforts to increase employment and advancement opportunities for individuals who are blind, DeafBlind, and blind with other disabilities in Washington and across the nation.

Recreational Engagement Award: Skihawks Racing Team

Skihawks Racing Team provides training and racing opportunities for developmentally challenged athletes in alpine, Nordic, and snowboarding winter sports. In addition to gaining self-esteem by competing in Washington Special Olympics, team members benefit from the comradery of team sports and learning good sportsmanship.

Ron Adams Outstanding Client Award: Scott Palm

Scott Palm, a WAF client since 2004, first took out a loan to found Palmtree Enterprises as a mentoring service. More recently Scott has been traveling around the state presenting Disability Awareness” How to Work Together, a program which trains caregivers from a client’s perspective.

The Washington Access Fund will present awards to individuals, businesses, and organizations that have made noteworthy efforts to include, serve, and help people with disabilities across the state. Click here to see last year’s Award Winners. The application form and award category descriptions are below.

Award Event: Thursday, November 12th, 2015
Time: 5:30 p.m. Cocktail hour; 6:00 p.m. Dinner. To be followed by 7:00 p.m. Awards Ceremony.
Where: Bell Harbor International Conference Center, 2211 Alaskan Way, Pier 66
Purpose: The awards will recognize businesses, organizations, and individuals who have positively impacted people with disabilities in Washington.

Nomination Deadline

Deadline for nominations is September 30th, 2015.

Nomination Procedures

Please submit all the following information on the PDF Nomination Form or Word Nomination Form:

  1. Name and all required contact information for both nominee and nominator.
  2. Identify award category (one per submission)
  3. In ONE to TWO paragraphs describe why nominee is deserving of recognition and in what ways their contribution or achievement has been outstanding. Examples of areas of effort you may choose to address include:
